  • Most of the culture traditions from this time come from Confusianism and Daoism
  • Values bravery, group loyalty, and hospitality 
  • Mecca- became welathy by taxing local trade. Home to tribes/clans, outlaws, and exiles
  • Muhammad Abdulla 570-632 CE
  • Lost his parents when he was young- became a shephard for money. He married a widow and had 6 children.
  • Quarns message through Muhammed
  • Quarn demanded social justice
  • Core message was the remembence of God
  • Muhammed changed the society
  • As islamic faith spreads, arabian empire is weakened by war and internal revolts

  • Shia saw themselves as a minority, sunnis established order. Shias revolt and that caused division in the islamic worlds.

Ch. 3 Intro to Part 2 & State&Empire

  The intro summarizes that the first civilizations were really impressive and powerful but at the same time, they were fragile because they could be taken over at any moment too. The new way of civilizations was what changed the human ways forever. We would never be able to go back to the earlier ways after learning how to settle down and live in one place. There was a long period of time where nothing changed with new civilizations. There were still Monarchs, women were still subordinate to men and there was a clear divide between the elite and everyone else. There were no new breakthroughs, they just kept living in cycles. Empire: states, political sytems of power. Civilizations: elements of common culture rather than a unified political system. Persia was an empire because there was a king.
