  • Different terrains produced different resources

  • Trade was important because people could trade for things they didn't have, like the africans imported salt.
  • Trade started to alter the economics of societies
  • Long distance trade allowed elites to separate themselves from commoners
  • Transformed political life:Taxes 
  • Trade became a way to spread religion, ideas, disease, animals
  • Eurasia: Inner and Outer zones that had different enviornments
  • Outer- better for agriculture and warmer, well watered
  • Inner- drier climate, not good for agriculture
  • Silk road was most popular when there were guards
  • Chinese homes were where most of textile production, mostly women were the labor force
  • The elite that had this fabric marked their status
  • Silk from China and Cotton from India were in high demand in the Roman Empire
  • Peasants gave up on growing food and focused on paper, porcelain and iron tools
  • Greece was affected by a new deadly disease from Egypt that killed twenty five percent of their population.

Summary: The document I read called, "Paneb, an Egyptian Troublemaker", started off with Paneb as a Egyptian boy who was adopted into a tomb making family. He had really intense fights with his adopted father, Neferhotep. He grew up and got married and had a very large family. He would often cheat on his wife. He would cheat with other married women, and was involved in rape. His son was involved too. Paneb was very controlling and made other people around him do everything for him like make his bed, feed his oxen, and weave his baskets that were for his own personal use. Ch. 3 Intro to Part 2 & State&Empire

  The intro summarizes that the first civilizations were really impressive and powerful but at the same time, they were fragile because they could be taken over at any moment too. The new way of civilizations was what changed the human ways forever. We would never be able to go back to the earlier ways after learning how to settle down and live in one place. There was a long period of time where nothing changed with new civilizations. There were still Monarchs, women were still subordinate to men and there was a clear divide between the elite and everyone else. There were no new breakthroughs, they just kept living in cycles. Empire: states, political sytems of power. Civilizations: elements of common culture rather than a unified political system. Persia was an empire because there was a king.
