Ch. 3 Intro to Part 2 & State&Empire

The intro summarizes that the first civilizations were really impressive and powerful but at the same time, they were fragile because they could be taken over at any moment too. The new way of civilizations was what changed the human ways forever. We would never be able to go back to the earlier ways after learning how to settle down and live in one place. There was a long period of time where nothing changed with new civilizations. There were still Monarchs, women were still subordinate to men and there was a clear divide between the elite and everyone else. There were no new breakthroughs, they just kept living in cycles. Empire: states, political sytems of power. Civilizations: elements of common culture rather than a unified political system. Persia was an empire because there was a king. I thought it was interesting when the king died and the culture was to set sacred fires and shave your head. But there was a political system in place with tax colectors, administrato...

Ch.2 Docs. Paneb, an Egyptian Troublemaker

Summary: The document I read called, "Paneb, an Egyptian Troublemaker", started off with Paneb as a Egyptian boy who was adopted into a tomb making family. He had really intense fights with his adopted father, Neferhotep. He grew up and got married and had a very large family. He would often cheat on his wife. He would cheat with other married women, and was involved in rape. His son was involved too. Paneb was very controlling and made other people around him do everything for him like make his bed, feed his oxen, and weave his baskets that were for his own personal use. His long time rival, Amennakht, gathered up enough evidence to get him in trouble for all his crimes. Paneb then just vanished. Questions: Since most of the evidence against Paneb comes from his archrival, historians should not grant very much weight to this because he was against Paneb, therefore everything he is going to have to say about him is going to be completely biased. You can expect to get a ...

The first civiliations were cities, states and unequal societies that started around 3500 BCE to 500 BCE. The civilizations represented a new tupe of society that was based on skill, wealth and status. These new societies were controled by leaders that used force. These new societies were overriding the old ways of living. There were 7 main societies that energed during this time. Ch.1 Agriculture

The rest of this chapter talks about how agriculture seriously advanced human development. Agriculture started about 12,000 years ago, and Agriculture refers to the cultivation of particular plants. Humans began to be able to chose what plants they wanted more of. What was cool to me was that Slayer said humans were  directing the process of human evolution. We definitely changed nature to fot our wants and need and that also had a hige effect on the environment and animals around where humans were settled.               Another thing that was surprising was that there used to be no Sahara Desert. It used to be hospitable to humans and they lived there! We also relied heavily on animals. We needed Llama and Alpacas for food and the pull things and sheep, goat, pig, cattle for food.              The human population after the agriculture revolution was ab...
